Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to account for typological characteristic of Relative Clauses in Archaic Chinese. There are three types of Relative Clause in Archaic Chinese. They have different grammaticalization paths, so they have different word order and function. ‘ZHE’ relativizes the subject of RC; ‘SUO’ relativizes the direct object, the indirect object and the oblique object of RC; ‘ZHI’ also relativizes the subject of RC. The relativizer ‘ZHE’ and ‘SUO’ comes from the noun ‘ZHE’ and ‘SUO’, but the relativizer function of ‘ZHI’ comes from the demonstrative pronoun ‘ZHI’. In general, ‘ZHE’ RC appeared in the subject position, ‘SUO’ RC appeared in the object position. but ‘ZHE’ RC also appeared in the object position when they are in judgment sentences, existence sentences and inverted sentences. ‘SUO’ RC also appeared in the subject position when they are in judgment sentences, existence sentences and inverted sentences.
