Abstract

Linguists may approach speaker/hearer`s linguistic intuition in two ways. One approach is to seek for speaker`s generative strategy, which has long been taken by most generative grammarians. The other is to focus on hearer`s interpretation strategy. In this sense, the former can be called generation-oriented approach and the latter may well be called interpretation-oriented approach. By the way, speaker is required to generate linguistic expressions according to hearer`s interpretation strategy. So, we could expect to capture linguistic intuition by taking interpretation -oriented approach. Linguistic units can be, though roughly, divided into two classes according to their function. Most linguistic units are used to express the real world, while the others function to manifest the grammatical relations between lingistic expressions. To put it differently, the functional units are markers which show the dependence relations between constituents in point. In the process of interpretation, hearer is fairly expected to focus on the functional units manifesting grammatical relations. Therefore, the main task of interpretation-oriented approach is to investigate the system as a whole and the characteristic of each marker. This investigation will embody the marker theory of language in general and in particular. As most grammatical relations are shown by means of `Josa` and `eomi`, it is crucial to describe them properly. Traditionally, eomi has been treated as morphological units in terms of conjugation. But to describe eomi as conjugation has a fatal flaw. With that, we can hardly distinguish syntactic category and its grammatical function, which are closely related but should be separated clearly. With the theoretical background introduced above, this paper, following Woo Soon-jo(1994) and his subsequent studies, presents a sketch of Korean grammar. This paper argues that both josa and eomi belong to the one and the same marker system, but they ate disticinct only is their fimctions. In coatrast, the notion marker can succinctly and consistently describe the distribution and function of the agglutinating morphemes. Thus, it helps to solve long standing problems such as `ida` construction, complex NP construction coordinate constructions, and so on.
