Abstract

This paper deals with the tbare-construction and the semantic or cognitive function of the there-subject. In Chomsky`s Generative Grammar, "there" has bean generally treated as a dummy element that has no special meaning in the there-construction. However, it is argued that "them" has very special function as a meaningful element presenting a new entity in the hearer`s mental space in the there-construction. At first, there-construction is to be analyzed in the point of the Argument Chain Analysis and Attract- a Theory and then their problems are to be pointed out. Next, the function of there-subject as a semantic or cognitive element is to be discussed in detail and then it is argued that "there" has not only a categorial feature [D] but also a case feature to have to be interpreted in the conceptual-intentional system. Finally, in this point, there-construction is to be reanalyzed and it is argued that this asnalysis has many advantages:
