Abstract

The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 12 (2), 115-143. The purpose of this paper is to make a thorough research on diverse analyses of the small clauses and to study the proper clausal categories. First, I’ll survey the concepts and the types of the clauses as well as small clause. Chomsky(1981) defines a clause as follows: S' → COMP S, S → NP INFL VP. He says the small clause is a kind of clause, but it does not have INFL and copular. Stowell(1981) suggests the following X-bar schemata, X" → SPEC X', X' → X'(X"*). There are two types of small clauses. One is a complement small clause and the other is an adjunct small clause. The complement small clause is subcategorized and isn’t thematically independent, but the adjunct small clause is not subcategorized and is thematically independent. The analyses of small clause are divided into constitutional analyses and non-constitutional analyses. Constitutional analyses for small clauses regard the small clause as one constituent. For the constitutional analyses ; Chomsky(1981) presents S category, Kitagawa(1985) presents S' category, Hornstein & Lightfoot(1984, 1987) suggests INFL' category analysis. On the other hand, for non-constitutional analyses, Williams(1980, 1983) & Rothstein(1983) suggest namely the subject-predicate theory. The small clause is not simple as the traditional grammar in nowadays’ theory. Therefore, we must study and analyze the small clause as well as the other clause completely.
