초록
“Near” and “far” are instances of our cognitive perception of space. Such distance-related words indicate not only physical distance between a referent and a target object but also conceptual distance between time, social relations, abstract entities, and so on. This research examines meanings and usages of the word kakkapta ‘near/close’ by analyzing corpus data in terms of metaphor theory. To characterize kakkapta, this study examines instances of kakkapta in the Sejong Project Corpus, classifying its meanings in terms of the following categories: (i) physical proximity, (ii) temporal closeness, (iii) closeness in social relations, (iv) proximity to a particular number or quantity, and (v) closeness between two abstract entities. Examination shows that the basic meaning of kakkapta, the physical proximity between concrete objects, extends to the conceptual distance or proximity between temporal sequences, social relations, and even abstract entities. Such metaphorical extension of the basic meaning can be derived from the ground that temporal sequences, social relations, and abstract entities are viewed as distance between a reference point and a target on a linear line. Finally, this corpus-based cognitive approach to language can serve as a foundation for research which attempts to characterize metaphorically extended meanings of other space-denoting words.
Abstract
“Near” and “far” are instances of our cognitive perception of space.
