There is a great number and a wide range of discourse markers (DM), so they form an open category, and can be classified and analyzed in different dimensions. However, as mainly functioning as devices of organizing discourses and guiding to understand discourses, they should be analyzed based on discourse rather than sentences. So firstly, we classify the DMs according to their forms, and then focus on those with the interrogative form in discourse, the characteristic form of tag questions. We argue that tag questions can be seen as DMs, namely a special kind of DM, because they not only have the characteristics of DMs in general, but also retain the characteristics of questions. By analyzing the representative interrogative form DM “Ni zhidao ma (Do you know)?”, we explore the discoursal functions of interrogative form DMs. Finally, we present in detail the process of the tag question’s development from the original function of question to that of DM, and the attendant interactive function in this process. By doing so, we try to reveal the functions of tag questions as DM’s in discourse and their universality and individuality, and to deepen our understanding about DMs which we can use in language teaching.
