초록

‘ida’ (Korean copula) is one of the most frequently used forms in Korean, and ‘ida’ constructions are construed as having various meanings, for example, according to contexts, ‘I am ham sandwich’ (literally Korean) can mean ‘The food which I’d like to eat/make is ham sandwich’ (in some case, ‘I’d like to eat/make ham sandwich’ is also possible), and ‘You are football again' can mean ‘You are playing/watching fooball again’. Most studies on ‘ida’ or ‘ida’ construction have focused on the grammatical category of ‘ida’ or syntactic structure of the construction. This paper aims to explain why ‘ida’ construction can be construed so variously. In this paper I claimed that the various meanings of ‘ida’ constructions are due to metonymy (as for the above examples, ‘PERSON WHO ORDERS/MAKES FOOD’ FOR ‘THE FOOD’ and ‘NAME OF A GAME’ FOR ‘PLAYING/WATCHING THE GAME’). As such, it follows that we don't need any special syntactic explanations in order to show their meaning differences.
