Abstract

The creative process of acting has been considered as the field of genius and talent so that the scientific approach to the acting process was thought to be impossible and unnecessary. Many people involved in the arts of acting have experienced any kinds of artistic inspiration, but they could not explain the existence of inspiraion scientifically. If the inspiration is ‘the creative state of mind’ and we can explain how our mind works, we could be led to the science of inspiration. Traditionally, our mind has been treated as the isolated entity from our body. However, from the perspectives and discoveries of cognitive science, our mind is the cognitive process happening between our body and environments. In this paper, based on ‘the theory of mind’ from cognitive science, I try to postulate the science of inspiration. The key theory is 'simulation theory' so that I apply this simulation theory to the actual acting training model called ‘image simulation training.’ In the course of discussing the acting process and scientific approach to sense, feeling, imagination, image, thought, and language, the acting theorists and practitioners such as Denis Diderot, Konstantin Stanislavsky, Michael Chekhov, and Kristin Linklater are the important reference points. At the end of this paper, I insist that the postulation of the science of artistic inspiration is necessary for the clear communication in the acting training and education.
