Abstract
In the 19th century, Stanislavski developed a systematic and scientific acting system by incorporating the latest scientific theories of his time. Since then, modern science has advanced rapidly, introducing new theories and heralding the emergence of an acting paradigm that embraces these innovations. Contemporary neuroscience has uncovered that the human brain processes information through pre- dictive systems based on past experiences and unconscious reaction mechanisms essential for survival, which can lead to perceptual illusions. These theoretical insights suggest a novel acting approach wherein actors can naturally and effectively convey emotions and behaviors akin to real-life experi- ences by harnessing unconscious gestures. Accordingly, this study aims to develop an acting education program grounded in modern neuroscience principles—specifically, the brain's predictive system, the concept of the 'deceptive brain,' and the role of the striatum in procedural memory. The program fo- cuses on enabling actors to transcend conscious actions and seamlessly employ unconscious gestures to authentically express emotions and behaviors. The curriculum encompasses training in interactions with virtual objects, sensory exercises, behavioral pattern development, and unconscious gesture refinement, thereby systematizing techniques that prompt actors to engage in spontaneous, unconscious responses beyond deliberate actions. Furthermore, by identifying and repetitively practicing gestures and behav- ioral patterns that actors instinctively exhibit in specific contexts, the program introduces methods to induce the brain to perceive these scenarios as genuine. This educational framework builds upon Kang Yang-won's 'acting techniques that deceive the brain' and incorporates elements of the 'behavioral act- ing techniques' from the theater company Dong. The developed training regimen was implemented with 24 participants, including acting majors from the Department of Performing Arts at Anyang University, the Department of Film and Imaging at Sangmyung University, and professional actors from the theater company Nolteo. Results demonstrated significant improvements in actors' immersion, emotional con- veyance, and the naturalness of physical reactions. The neuroscience-based acting education program proposed in this study offers a novel paradigm distinct from traditional acting instruction methods and is anticipated to enhance actors' performance capabilities.
