초록
It is widely accepted that Korean particle -lato imparts focus on the constituent it attaches to and also invokes a pragmatic scale. Recently there have been studies claiming that the particle requires the presence of a proposition higher on the scale than the ordinary semantic value. Some of them treat this particular proposition as a presupposition triggered by the particle. The current paper discusses some discourses containing the particle, explicating the roles of focusing and presupposition in its uses. It is shown that a proposition higher on the pragmatic scale than the ordinary semantic value is not necessary in accounting for the discourses. Instead, the negation of focus closure is held as the crucial component in the semantics of the particle. Specifically, the paper argues that the speaker presupposes the negation of focus closure and contrasts it with the ordinary semantic value by employing -lato.
