초록
The current study aims to identify the core semantic properties of Korean scalar focus particle mace. In the literature, the particle is analyzed in terms of how extreme its focus value is, whether it indicates unexpectedness of the situation depicted by the sentence that contains it, or what kind of speaker attitude it reflects. The discussions that follow show that the particle is not necessarily responsible for any of these properties. The study finds that mace is responsible for evoking a consequentiality scale on which the prejacent is ranked higher than its propositional alternative(s). In this approach, the main role of mace is to indicate that the proposition associated with it is considered more serious and impactful in contrast to another prominent proposition salient in the context.
