Abstract
When Korean learns Japanese, he often falls in wrong pronunciations some of which are due to suprasegmental motivations, some of which are due to articulatory ones. In this paper, I examine the pronunciation of phoneme /N / in Japanese in articulatory phonetic view. Occasionally, the allophones of /N /, that is, [m, n, ◎, ◎, N, V~, z~, 3~] are introduced in the Japanese learning texts. If the allophones [m, n, ◎] were taken as Korean phoneme /m, n, ◎/by Korean, they are under the influence of Korean phonological rules, such as, Japanese /hoN-o/ into [hono] or [honno] which has 2 mora, Japanese 4 mora word /hoNra i / into [hollai] which is converted to 3 mora and changed into different sound. In another fashion, Japanese pronunciation are pronounced by the corresponding Korean articulatory features, for example, /keNsa/ into [kensa] ([+apical]→[+dorsal]), /reNai/ into [re◎ai]([+nasalized vowel] → [+nasal stop]) and so on. The essential points of the pronunciation of the phoneme /N/ is the lowering of uvular and the opening of nasal cavity, on which we must focus in /N/pronunciation teaching as well as on the taking enough length.
