Abstract
This paper maintains that the so-called adjectives in Korean should be re-classified into verbs, namely descriptive verbs (=stative verbs) or subjective verbs (=psychological verbs). This is based on the morpho-syntactic approach. And the differences between adjectives and verbs, though not ignored by us, are not enough to guarantee the existence of the distinct category Adjective (A). Adjectives in Korean show the almost same behavior as verbs in various morpho-syntactic contexts. But it is clear that Korean has adjectives. This paper shows that the real and typical adjectives in Korean should be found on a different level. In other words, the lexical elements, such as gukje 국제’, ‘sae 새’, ‘yeoreo 여러’, ‘yumyeong 유명’, ‘mian 미안’, and ‘joyong 조용’, are the real adjectives, in spite of their heterogeneous classification in the traditional Korean grammar. Consequently, the new category ‘A’ of adjective in Korean can contain the so-called adnoun (=gwanhyeongsa 관형사) and the bound roots (=eogeun 어근) or root noun (=eogeunmyeongsa 어근명사), which show typical characteristics of adjectives from a universal point of view, the attributive function as well as the predicative function.
