초록
We examined two types of so-called double passive constructions in Korean: passive verb+'-eojida' construction and passive verb+'-ge doeda' construction, and try to find out some appropriate answers for the fol -lowing questions: Are the two constructions genuine double passive con -structions? Why is only the first construction usually taken as an example showing the ungrammaticality of double passive constructions? We underlined the idea that there exists a very close relationship between 'change-of-state' and passive voice, i.e. the thematic role of Patient is given to the subject of both 'change-of-state' sentences and passive sentences. And it was shown that '-eojida' or '-ge doeda' has the meaning of 'change-of-state' which is inherited from the meaning of 'jida' or 'doeda' each. Furthermore, we observed that they can be used to express passive voice in adequate contexts. Based on those observations, we concluded that the so-called double passives are not genuine double passive constructions, but express 'change-of-state' as well as passive voice. We made sure that there exist two differences between '-eojida' construction and '-ge doeda' construction. First, 'jida' of '-eojida' construction is a suffix whereas 'doeda' of '-ge doeda' construction is an auxiliary verb, which means a morpho-syntactic difference between the two constructions. Second, '-ge' carries the meaning of expectation so that '-ge doeda' construction has the meaning of expectation as well as 'change-of-state'. Based on the two differences, we accounted for why passive verb+'-eojida' construction is usually treated as a typical example of misuse of double passives.
