Abstract
In the 1910s, the Korean Americans were directly influenced by western culture, and performed the plays in the churches, schools, and the Korean-American organizations, which had played a role in identifying and strengthening their ethnic community and the nationality. Previous studies have pointed out that the 3 dramas of the Korean American preceded the domestic dramaa in the 1910s, and considered these plays as thematized the patriotism and the national independence. The Hero of the Peninsula(1915), The Biggest Play in the World(1915), and Compatriots(1917) were all published in Shinhanminbo(新韓民報). In this paper, however, I would argue that The Biggest Play in the World(1915) is not a play but a narrative, and although The Hero of the Peninsula(1915) and Compatriots(1917) are written as novels, it should be regarded as plays because they were intended to play distinctly. However, these plays were likely to have been rehearsed impromptu for they were closed to the narrative writings. In the previous studies, the Korean American dramas have been read as nationalistic works emphasizing anti-Japanese, patriotism and independence. In fact, the Korean American dramas played a role in identifying and strengthening their ethnic community and nationalism in churches, schools, and the Korean-American organizations’ nationalistic rituals. Among them, especially the Korean-American organizations replaced and represented their lost homeland and nation. Especially in Compatriots, the Korean American revealed their self-knowledge very well not only as a colonized and diaspora, but also as a representative subject of nation and independence.
