Abstract

This paper examines two docudramatic plays published in the California-based Korean newspaper, The New Korea (Sinhan Minpo): The Biggest Theatre in the World (Syekye-ësŏ Tyeil Kŭn Yŏnkŭk, 1915) by Paek Il-kyu, and Passionate Play (Hŭimun Yŏlhŏl, 1923) by Hong Ŏn. In analyzing these plays, I argue that Paek and Hong rendered fiction – that Korean immigrants in the U.S. sought to realize in reality – as if truth, by taking advantage of the docudramatic theatrical form. Arguably, Paek and Hong’s plays explore the most crucial global and local issues impacting Koreans in the 1910s: World War I and the March First Movement, respectively. While these plays are fact-based, they also include fictional parts, particularly regarding the relationship between the nation and the world. Specifically, Paek’s play portrays Koreans as having had the ability of staging the world, and Hong’s play reconstructs the March First Movement (that failed with no support from the world) into a victorious historical account. The nation’s future that these plays portray is, after all, the future that Korean immigrants in the U.S. wanted to pursue. That future consisted of Korea becoming a modernized, independent nation in ‘favor’ of the ‘generous’ civilization that the U.S. represented. Paek and Hong thus structured their plays in such a way as to facilitate the suspension of disbelief in the righteousness of American civilization, which Korean immigrants in the U.S. partially based their claim that they should serve as custodians of the nation. After all, I interpret the plays as having suggested an ‘as if’ version of existence that Korean immigrants in the U.S. created in order to further privilege their position, armed with their proximity to American modernity as well as distance from Japanese colonialism. This paper discusses theatrical activities by Koreans in the U.S. during the Japanese colonial period. In readdressing such a largely overlooked history in contemporary scholarship, I challenge the prevalent nationalist historiography assessing the modernization of Korea as a consequence of the presumed exclusive interplay between Japan and Korea. In so doing, I also question the role theatre played in the formation of nationalistic discourses, which developed as nothing more than docudramatic narratives blurring the line between fact and fiction.
