Abstract

This study aims to examine the acting and meaning of ‘citizen-Participatory theater’ that have recently been paying attention to Korean theater, and to enhance the social value of ‘acting’ through this. Here, ‘citizen participatory theater’ involves in performances played by non-professional actors and performances the daily stories of citizens. Until now, the acting of ‘citizen participatory theater’ has been mainly mentioned in terms of life healing and aesthetic experience, but this study focuses on the act of 'participation' itself. In these plays, citizens' participation is not only an important factor distinguished from traditional theater, but also an active social activity of citizens. Therefore, this study identifies what social meaning and value citizens' participation and acting in theater is and presents a turning point for civic participation plays later. To this end, citizen participatory theater and acting were considered from the perspective of Bishop's concept of ‘social turn’ and Arendt's ‘action’. In modern society, citizens participating in plays and performing 'acting' is 'gathering and making a relationship'. Gathering and making a relationship is an essential activity in human existence that proves one's value through relationships with others. Therefore, participating in a meeting (theater) and acting is an active act and ceremony for humans to confirm the social significance of their existence. Individuals participating in this ceremony have the power to reconsider and change their communities. From this point of view, this study aims to contribute to more specific social roles of a ‘public sphere’ beyond individual activities such as self-realization of citizens by 'citizen participatory theater', which has recently been conducted in various forms.
