Abstract
This article historicizes and theorizes a visual biopolitics that rearranges the multispecies relations between settlers, indigenous peoples, and non-human actors in Eulsukdo into an affective geography of revealing and concealing through boundaries and hierarchies. It also discusses how theater can and has been used to challenge biopower as a technology for reassembling agential realities. Accordingly, this article considers the history of Eulsukdo as a process of settler colonialist enactment, and examines the cases of the performance Old Man, Flying as a Bird and the exhibition Time Walker that resist its visual representation. The performance of Old Man, Flying as a Bird, which deals with the death of an indigenous person in a racialized space, falls into the category of land-based dramaturgy and place-based dramaturgy. On the other hand, Busan Museum of Contemporary Art's exhibition Time Walker, which takes the form of an escape game, is a community-engaged dramaturgy that disrupts the settler temporality of time travel through the craft of “exploration, discovery, and gathering.” As practices of indigenous and relational dramaturgy, these examples have the potential for alternative historiographies of settler regime.
