장애연극의 시간성과 극장 바깥의 연극

이 글은 동시대 장애연극의 몇 가지 중요한 사례를 통해 연극의 시간과 공간을 재편하는 장애연극의 미학과 정치성을 논의하고자 한다. 장애연극은 ‘보통이 아닌’ ‘다른’ 몸을 언어화하여 극장 무대의 시간과 공간을 근대적 질서와 규범으로부터 이탈시킨다. 근대적 질서에 의해 구획된 시간과 공간은 치유 담론과 함께 장애의 몸을 예외적인 것으로 만든다. 그러나 장애연극은 분리될 수 없는 ‘몸-마음’의 퍼포먼스를 통해 미학적 정치성을 시도한다. 장애연극은 ‘불구의 시간’을 통해 능력주의에 균열을 낸다. 갑작스러운 시작과 멈춤, 지연과 휴지는 연극에 다른 리듬을 만든다. 선형적이고 점진적인 시간 속에서 몸으로부터 이탈했던 경험은 연극적 퍼포먼스를 통해 자신의 속도를 찾고 유연한 시간을 경험하는 과정으로 이행한다. 이는 자본주의와 능력주의 시간에 대한 비판을 가능하게 한다. 또한 장애연극은 ‘미스핏’을 가시화하는 ‘몸-마음’을 드러냄으로써 극장의 접근성을 질문한다. 극장의 물리적 접근성뿐만 아니라 심리적, 사회적 접근성을 통해 “누가 극장에 오는가”라는 정치적 질문에 답한다. 장애연극은 극장 바깥의 공간을 연극적 장소로 만들면서 연극에 다 담을 수 없는 현실을 끊임없이 환기한다. 랑시에르는 정치가 ‘몫 없는 자’들이 몫을 획득하는 과정으로 보았다. 통치 질서에 균열을 내고 시간과 공간을 분할하는 장애연극이야말로 미학과 정치가 만나는 지점이다. 한국연극은 지금 이 마주침을 성찰하고 있다.
Abstract
This article discusses the aesthetics and politics of disability theater that reorganizes the time and space of theater through several important examples of contemporary disability theater. Disability theater deviates the time and space of the theater stage from modern order and norms by using ‘extraordinary’ and ‘different’ bodies as language. The time and space partitioned by the modern order, along with the curativeness discourse, make the disabled body exceptional. However, disability theater attempts aesthetic politics through the performance of the inseparable ‘body-mind’. Disability theater breaks time through ‘crip time’. Sudden starts and stops, delays and pauses create different rhythms in the theater. The experience of being separated from the body in linear and gradual time transitions into a process of finding one’s own pace and experiencing flexible time through theatrical performance. This makes it possible to criticize time of capitalism and ableism. Disability theater questions the accessibility of theater by revealing the ‘body-mind’ that makes ‘misfit’ visible. We answer the political question, “Who comes to the theater?” not only through the physical accessibility of the theater, but also through psychological and social accessibility. Disability theater also constantly evokes realities that cannot be contained in plays by turning the space outside the theater into a theatrical place. Rancière viewed politics as a process by which ‘those without a share’ obtain a share. Disability theater, which cracks the ruling order and divides time and space, is the point where aesthetics and politics meet. Korean theater is now reflecting on this encounter.
