Abstract

This study explores the ethical dimensions of spectatorship through an analysis of Lebanese artist Rabih Mroué’s performance Three Posters. Using Emmanuel Levinas’s ethics of alterity as a theoretical framework, the research examines how the encounter between spectator and performance creates a space of ethical responsibility. Mroué’s work, which incorporates video footage of a martyrdom declaration by resistance fighter Jamal Sati, deliberately reveals the mechanisms of image manipulation while simultaneously exposing the face of the Other in its nakedness. This paradoxical strategy places the audience in a complex ethical position where critical distance and intimate responsibility coexist. Levinas’s concept of the face serves as a crucial analytical tool for understanding how Three Posters transcends mere representation to become an ethical encounter. When Mroué stages the repeated takes of martyrdom declarations—first through his own performance and then through the actual footage—he systematically strips away the ideological and contextual layers, ultimately revealing what Levinas describes as “the face in its nudity.” The spectator is thus confronted not with an object of understanding but with an ethical imperative that demands response. In contemporary performance contexts where audiences frequently encounter cultural and historical realities distant from their own, the question of how to witness the unfamiliar becomes increasingly urgent. Mroué’s work highlights this tension, challenging the traditional notion of passive spectatorship and reconfiguring the act of looking as an ethical practice. Through its deliberate destabilization of truth and representation, Three Posters transforms the spectatorial gaze into a site of ethical responsibility, revealing how the act of watching becomes inseparable from the ethical demand to respond to the Other.
