Abstract

This study examines the politics of representation and theatricality in Rabih Mroué’s The Pixelated Revolution. By analyzing the power relations surrounding the ownership of truth as mediated through video images produced by the Syrian government and protesters, this research investigates how the work deconstructs existing truth claims while constructing new ones. The contrast between the fixed gaze of power symbolized by the government’s tripod-mounted cameras and the traversing gaze of the protesters’ low-resolution mobile phones reveals how Mroué strategically employs theatrical fictiveness to construct alternative truths. Focusing on the paradox of authenticity that emerges in this process, this study demonstrates how theatre can function not merely as a tool of representation but as a site for questioning the nature of truth itself. This suggests compelling possibilities for theatre’s political and aesthetic roles in our multi-media age.
