담화표지 ‘어디’의 의미와 기능 — 한중 대조를 중심으로 —

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the discourse functions of the Korean interrogative marker “어디” used as a discourse marker and its corresponding expressions in Chinese. To achieve this, previous studies were first reviewed to reorganize the discourse functions of “어디” and the corresponding Chinese discourse markers “哪里/哪儿.” Using the revised functions of “어디” as an analytical framework, this study employed corpus data to investigate how “어디” functions within specific contexts. Furthermore, from a contrastive analysis perspective, this study explored the relationship between the discourse functions of the Korean marker “어디” and the Chinese marker “哪里/哪儿.” The findings indicate that “어디” exhibits a multi-layered usage in both negative functions (e.g., denial and rebuttal, dissatisfaction and blame, regret) and positive functions (e.g., stalling for time, confirming attempts, determination, modesty), whereas the Chinese marker “哪里/哪儿” is primarily limited to functions (denial and rebuttal, dissatisfaction and blame, and modesty). Thus, in examining the various discourse functions of “어디” in different contexts and its corresponding relationship with “哪里/哪儿” in Chinese, it was found that, in addition to “哪里/哪儿,” other expressions may sometimes be used, and in some cases, no corresponding marker appears at all. Through these discussions, this study provides a clearer theoretical framework that can offer more precise educational content regarding the Korean discourse marker “어디”.
