Abstract
The Linguistics Association of Korea Journal, 12(1), 61-83. The aim of this thesis is to confirm three different usage of 'wae'(why) - wh-adverb, indefinite adverb, discourse marker - and to explore the functions of 'wae' as a discourse marker. It has been insisted that 'wae' is not used as a indefinite adverb, but I argued that 'wae' can be used as a indefinite adverb in several dialects. In this thesis I demonstrated that discourse marker 'wae' has developed from wh-adverb 'wae' by grammaticalization. And I explored several functions of discourse marker 'wae'. Among them the main function is evocation.
