Abstract
The present study examined appreciator’s preferences for art genre and category, and compared predictive factors between Korea and America. Participants(262 Koreans and 152 Americans) completed a self-report survey on preferred art genre and category(e.g., Asian/Western, classical/ contemporary, and figurative/abstract) and individual differences(e.g., personality, art knowledge, and art experience). Koreans’ most preferred art genre and category was Western art and their least preferred was abstract art. They preferred Western art to Asian art and figurative art to abstract art, and there were no differences between classical art and contemporary art. Americans’ most preferred art genre and category was classical art and their least preferred was Asian art. However, there were no significant differences in every pair. Openness to experience significantly predicted preferences for all genres and categories except for Asian art in Korean sample, and classical, Asian, and Western art in American sample. Emotional stability predicted preference for figurative art in both samples. Art knowledge predicted preferences for all art genres and categories except for classical art in Korean sample, and Asian and figurative art in American sample. For art experiences, we separately examined current art experience and childhood art experience. Current art experience predicted preferences for Western and contemporary art in Korean sample, although it was not related to any preference in American sample. Childhood art experience predicted preferences for abstract art in Korean sample, and classical and contemporary art in American sample. This study can provide actual information on preferences for art genre and category in each culture to researchers and educators on art appreciation.
