학부모들의 학교교육에 대한 인식과 열망에 관한 이해

본 연구는 중학생 자녀를 둔 학부모들을 대상으로 학부모들의 학교교육에 대한 인식과 열망 을 재조명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 계층적 차이가 나는 두 지역의 학부모들 12명을 선정하여 면담하였다. 면담결과 학부모들의 학교교육에 대한 인식과 열망의 정도에 있어서 계층과 자녀의 성적에 따라 다소 차이가 있었다. 우선, 중 상류층 학부모들은 하층 학부모들에 비해 현 학교교 육 전반에 대한 강한 불신을 가지고 있었으며, 보다 학교교육과정에 깊이 관여하고자 하는 태도 를 보였다. 다음으로, 가르침과 돌봄을 분리하지 않는 교사에 대한 열망은 모두 학부모들의 동 일한 바램으로 나타났으며, 특히 젊은 교사들에 대해 호의적인 시각을 가지고 있었다. 마지막으 로, 자녀의 학업성취에 대한 열망이 모든 학부모들로 하여금 다양한 역할을 수행하도록 만들었 다. 특히, 하층이며 자녀의 성적이 하위권인 학부모의 경우, 정보수집가로서 그리고 학교구성원 으로서 역할을 수행함에 있어 학교와는 거리두기를 하였으며, 중 상류층이며 자녀의 성적이 상 위권인 학부모의 경우, 자녀교육을 위해 교육행정 및 정책에 민첩하게 대응해 나갔다.
Abstract
This study attempts to re-examine parents' consciousness and aspirations on schooling whose children are middle school students. Open-ended interviews were employed as a tool to collect qualitative data from twelve parents whose social classes were divided into middle and lower classes. The results are summarized as follows. The parents from both social classes had a difference in some degree in their consciousness and desires on schooling. First, the middle class parents showed stronger mistrust than the lower class parents on the overall present schooling and the former showed a higher degree of concerns with participation on schooling. Second, regardless of social class and children's achievement level the parents had a preference for teachers with high level of instruction and caring of students. Especially, the parents showed a preference for young teachers. Finally, the parents were eager to take multiple roles for the achievement of their children, including information collector, school constituents, and evaluator of educational policy for their children's education. Their emphasis of the roles was a little different according to social class and their children's achievement level. For instance, as information collector and school constituent the parents from lower social class and whose children's achievement level was relatively low showed a social and psychological distance from their schools, while the parents from middle class and whose children's achievement level was relatively high showed a sensitive response to educational administration and policy with a keen interest in their children's achievement and educational advancement.
