학습자의 인식론적 신념: 연구의 동향과 과제

초록

지식의 본질과 정당화의 문제를 다루는 인식론 영역은 그동안 주로 철학적인 시각에서 연구되어 왔으나, 최근 ‘인식론적 신념(epistemological belief)' 혹은 ’개인적 인식론(personal epistemology)’ 등으로 칭해지면서 교육학 분야에서 상당한 주목을 받고 있다. 지극히 사변적이고 일반론적인 입장에서 다루어지던 인식론의 문제를 구체적인 개인의 신념 문제로 개념화하고 논의할 수 있는 맥락을 얻게 된 것은 교육 활동을 연구하는 입장에서 볼 때 매우 의미 있는 소득이 아닐 수 없다.이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 학습자의 인식론적 신념에 대한 최근의 연구 동향을 인식론적 신념의 범주와 차원에 대한 개념화 방식, 인식론적 신념의 변화 양상, 학습과의 관련성, 그리고 연구 방법론적 특성 등의 주요 이슈를 중심으로 포괄적으로 고찰하였다. 아울러 선행 연구에서 충분히 주목하지 못한 중요한 문제들을 다음 세 가지로 나누어 분석 제시하였다. 첫째, 인식론적 신념의 형성과 발달에 미치는 현행 학교의 맥락적 특성의 문제를 교육과정, 교수방법, 평가방법 등을 중심으로 비판적으로 해석하였다. 둘째, 인식론적 신념의 발달을 촉진할 수 있는 조건들을 논의하고 이를 위해 학교의 제반 여건이 어떻게 개선되어야 하는지를 논의하였다. 끝으로, 측정의 방법론 및 연구의 설계, 이론화 등의 측면을 중심으로 연구 방법론적인 정교화를 위한 과제를 제언하였다.
