In the modern market economy, the operating conditions of Cooperatives are changed quite differently from that of founders’ time. The challenges confronted the Cooperatives are diverse: The globalization of economy, the repeatedly arising economic crisis, hard competition pressure from national and transnational corporations and the descending loyalty of members etc. There have been sufficient discussions about how Korean Cooperatives can overcome the prevailing identity crisis. Most of them are focusing on reshaping the governance structure and the rationalization of the business operation. This paper attempts to formulate some theses that fit consolidating the identity of Korean Cooperatives in the time of economic volatility. Three theses are: First, Cooperative is a common value-community and must remain as the common value-community. Second, Cooperative must concentrate on her role as a social capital for her members and communities. Third, Cooperative is and must function as an innovative network for her members and communities. These theses are based on the assumption that human being is not only homo oeconomicus, but also normative-affective in nature.
