교육철학 방법으로서의 프래그머티즘 재음미: 프랙티스의 교육적 의미를 중심으로

이 글은 프래그머티즘을 교육철학 탐구의 한 방법으로 논의하는 일이 어떻게 이루어질 수 있는지를 탐구하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 논문의 초두에서 먼저 ‘학문의 방법’이 의미하는 바를 과학적인 방법을 들어 제시해 보고, 그 맥락에서 철학적인 방법과 나아가 교육철학의 방법이 갖는 다원적인 성격을 논의한다. 프래그머티즘을 교육철학의 한 방법으로 도입하기 위해 연구자는 최근 들어 국내 교육철학계에서 종종 등장하는 ‘프랙티스’ 개념에 대한 논의 흐름과 그것이 프래그머티즘의 지식관과 어떻게 연결될 수 있는지를 심층적으로 분석한다. ‘교과를 프랙티스로서 가르쳐야 한다’는 말은 학교에서 배우게 되는 공식적인 지식을 학생들 각자의 비공식적인 세계, 그들의 삶이 펼쳐지는 세계와 연결 짓고, 후자를 전자를 통해 더욱 풍부하게 살찌운다는 말로 해석된다. 그리고 이 점에서 프랙티스 개념은 바로 프래그머티즘이 추구하는 지식에 대한 관점과 직접 연결될 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to investigate how it can be done to discuss Pragmatism as a method of doing Philosophy of Education. The essay begins with discussing what it means to say of ‘a method of an academic discipline’ by giving an example of ‘scientific method’, and in that context further discusses about the multiplicity of philosophical method and methods of philosophy of education. For inviting Pragmatism as a method of philosophy of education, the author of the essay analyses the concept of the practice which has recently been one of the major topics in the community of philosophers of education in Korea, and the possibility of connecting the concept with the Pragmatic perspective of knowledge. What it means to ‘teach school subjects as practices’ is to link the official school knowledge with the unofficial world of the students and their own life, and make the latter rich with the former. And in this respect, the concept of the practice can be directly connected to the viewpoint that Pragmatism pursues.
