본 연구는 2018년 국내 최저임금의 인상이 개별 기업 수준의 임금, 고용과 수익성에 미친 영향을 분석하였다. 최저임금 인상의 인과적 효과의 식별을 위하여 평균임금이 익년도 최저임금보다 낮은 저임금기업을 처치군으로 간주하는 이중차분모형을 활용하였다. 75,000여개의 외부감사대상기업에 대한 자료를 제공하는 TS2000 데이터베이스를 바탕으로 실증모형을 추정한 결과, 먼저 2018년 최저 임금의 인상이 저임금기업의 임금을 높인 반면 고용 및 기업의 수익성 측면에서는 통계적으로 유의한 변화를 가져오지 않은 것을 확인하였다. 이 같은 결과는 저임금기업이 속한 시장의 구조가 경쟁시장에 가까우며 최저임금 인상에 따른 비용 측면의 충격이 가격 조정을 통해 소비자에게 전가되었을 가능성을 시사한다.
Abstract
This study examines the impacts of the increase in the Korean national minimum wage in 2018 on wage, employment and profitability at the individual company level. To identify the causal effect of the minimum wage increase, a difference-in-difference model was used in which low-wage companies with average wages lower than the minimum wage of the following year were considered as the treatment group. Using the TS2000 database, which provides micro-data on about 75,000 companies subject to external audit, we find that, while the increase in the minimum wage in 2018 increased wages in low-wage companies, the effects of the policy change on the firm-level employment and profitability were found to be statistically insignificant. The results suggest that the market structure of low-wage companies is close to a competitive market where the cost impact of the minimum wage increase may have been passed on to consumers through price adjustments.
