전쟁방지에 교육은 무엇을 할 수 있을까?: 몬테소리와 듀이의 논의를 중심으로

본 연구의 목적은 20세기에 벌어진 양차 세계대전 시기에 전쟁방지를 위해 제안되었던 교육적 대응이 무엇이었는지를 몬테소리와 듀이에 기초해 살피고, 그러한 대응이 여전히 전쟁방지를 위해 교육이 할 수 있는 최선의 역할일 수 있는지를 검토해 보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 2장에서는 몬테소리와 듀이에 기초해 양차 세계대전 시기 전쟁방지를 위한 교육적 대응을 소개하고, 3장에서는 그러한 대응이 오늘날에도 여전히 유효할 수 있는지를 검토하였다. 논의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 몬테소리와 듀이가 권위에 대한 맹목적 복종을 전쟁의 한 원인으로 지적하면서 비판적으로 사고하고 책임 있게 행동하는 민주시민 양성을 강조했다는 점에서, 민주적 교육을 통한 민주 시민의 양성이 전쟁방지를 위해 필요하다. 둘째, 두 인물 모두가 국가주의(민족주의)의 폐쇄성을 전쟁의 한 원인으로 비판하고 있다는 점에서, 국제주의와 상호의존성에 입각한 보편적 세계인 양성이 요청된다. 셋째, 듀이가 폭력의 예방과 평화를 위해 개인이 반성적으로 사고하는 능력 함양을 통해 평화로운 사회로의 재건을 이야기한 것에 기초해, 비판적인 사고 습관 형성을 통해 정치적 문해의 능력을 길러주는 것이 필요하다. 넷째, 비록 이상주의라는 한계와 순진함을 노정하고 있기는 하지만, 결국 전쟁방지를 위해 교육이 할 수 있는 건 아주 특별한 것이 아니라 공적인 교육이 본래의 목적 중 하나로 설정하고 있는 민주적인 공화국에서 갖춰야 할 시민의 덕성 함양을 충실히 하는 것일 수밖에 없을 것이다.
Abstract
This study aimed to examine the educational solutions proposed for war prevention during the world war era of the 20th century, based on the ideas of Montessori and Dewey, and to consider whether such ideas can still be used for war prevention in the 21st century. To achieve this purpose, in chapter 2, I introduced the above-mentioned educational solutions and in chapter 3, I examined whether such solutions can still be reasonable today. The results are as follows. First, both Montessori and Dewey emphasized the importance of fostering critical thinking and responsible citizenship that questions blind obedience to authority. Therefore, democratic education aimed at cultivating democratic citizens is necessary for war prevention. Second, both figures criticized the closed- mindedness of nationalism as a cause of war, indicating the need for fostering a universal global citizenship based on internationalism and interdependence. Third, based on Dewey's idea of cultivating reflective thinking to prevent violence and promote peace, it is necessary to develop the ability to think critically and foster political literacy, which is essential for reconstructing a peaceful society. Fourth, these solutions may indeed face criticism for being idealistic, but ultimately, education's potential contribution to war prevention likely lies in cultivating the civic virtues required in a democratic republic, which aligns with the core objectives of public education.
