Abstract

This study was based on theories of the 'culture of permanent underclass' and the causes and consequences of mothers' history of antisocial behaviors. The strong relationship of mothers' antisocial behaviors to children's physical aggression presented the possibility of an intergenerational cycle. Using a longitudinal approach, a total of 472 children from 5 to 60 months of age were participated in the study to assess their behavior development. Mothers were interviewed four times, when their children were 5, 17, 30, and 60 months old. Data were analyzed by structural equation modeling. Results showed that prenatal factors, mothers' history of antisocial behaviors predicted child physical aggression at 60 months of age, confirming an intergenerational cycle. In addition, the results indicated that parenting style acts as a buffer between the cycle.
