Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of temperament, perceived parenting behaviors, stress responses (active coping and passive reactions) and the mediating effects of stress responses on antisocial behavior. A total 611 adolescents were administered a self-reporting exercise; the measures of Junior Temperament Character Inventory(JTCI), the Parental Bonding Instrument(PBI), the Korean Youth Self Report(YSR), and the Responses to Stress Questionnaire(RSQ). The results indicated that novelty seeking were the most important variable associated with antisocial behavior. Novelty seeking and perceived parental over-control, care and passive response were also significantly associated with antisocial behavior. The results of structural equation modeling revealed that novelty seeking and perceived parental behaviors had both direct effects and indirect effects which in turn were mediated by passive responses to antisocial behavior. The findings of this study suggested that novelty seeking, perceived parenting behaviors and high passive responses were risk factors for antisocial behavior and the influences of temperament. Moreover, it was also found that perceived parenting behaviors on antisocial behavior might partially depend on the levels of stress responses in adolescence. Based on these results, implications of the present study were discussed.
