Abstract

Despite the proven effectiveness of the principle of ABA(applied behavior analysis) in producing academic changes, it is not certain whether teachers use the procedure of ABA systematically in practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate (1) how teachers recognize the acceptance and practicabilities of ABA in school settings, (2) how frequently teachers apply the procedures of ABA into practice and (3) what barriers exist in classroom applications of ABA. 145 special education teachers participated in the survey. Data collected were analyzed through frequency, T-test and ANOVA statistical techniques. Results indicated that most teachers viewed the basic concepts and principles of ABA were valuable and procedures of ABA were useful in the school behavior management. However, teachers rated practicabilities of ABA lower than their ratings of values and usabilities of the theory. Compared to teachers' perceptions of ABA, there was a low degree of ABA practice. The general difficulties in teachers' ABA practice refer to the gap between the dynamic classwork and rigorous ABA procedures. Finally, implications of these results for school teachers and practitioners are discussed.
