Abstract
This study explores how the Introduction of generative AI reconfigures designers’ Role Transformation and activity systems within the brand design process, drawing on Engeström’s Activity Theory. Using Wheeler’s five-stage brand design process as the analytical framework, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight Korean brand designers experienced in using generative AI. The data were analyzed by examining interactions among activity elements through the lens of Contradiction–Adjustment–Expansion. The results show that designers’ Role Transformation have shifted from primary producers to strategic agents focused on judgment, coordination, and responsibility. While generative AI accelerated ideation and visualization across stages, designers increasingly assumed responsibility for verification, post-editing, brand coherence, and risk management, particularly in strategy, implementation, and management phases. These findings position generative AI as a mediating element that restructures both the brand design activity system and designers’ professional Role Transformation, suggesting the growing importance of contextual interpretation, decision-making, and governance-oriented competencies in brand design practice and education.
