Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the reality of the fathers' child-rearing involvement and obstruction and acceleration factors of it. This study is conducted a qualitative research on 7 fathers of children with diagnosed with ADHD. Data about the experiences of the fathers' child-rearing were collected through individual interviews. The results of this research are as follows. Fathers of children with ADHD participated in child-rearing passively. In addition, fathers compared children with ADHD and children without ADHD and used punitive discipline strategies. Lack of time, difficulties expressing themselves from the absence of role models for father, and difficulties problems of emotional control interrupted fathers' child-rearing involvement. Fathers were concerned about difficulties in peer relationships of children with ADHD and interactions with their wives. Fathers requested financial supports, familial programs camping with children with ADHD, and the effective information about child rearing. Strategies for increasing father participation are offered and implications for supporting fathers' child-rearing involvement are provided.
