Abstract
This research is to investigate how politeness expressions in ad copies influence audiences’ attitudes towards ads and ad brands. Generally, politeness expressions lead audiences to feel good and formulate positive images to information sources. Thus, politeness expressions in ad were predicted to generate aduineces’ attitudes towards ads and ad brands. In addition, since politeness expressions are heuristic cues as well as a variable related to emotion, the effect of politeness expressions was expected to be larger in low involvement products and/or emotional products than in high involvement producets and/or rational products. In order to test these propositions, the content analysis was employed for ads published in printed media. The results of statistical analyses showed that politeness expressions in ads increased audiences’ attitudes towards ads and ad brands positively. However, the effects of politeness expressions were found not to intereact with product types. Finally, this research discussed the implications of research results and suggested further studies related to politeness expressions.
