공동체 생활을 하는 인간은 타인의 감정을 존중해야만 한다. 타인의 감정을 해치지 않고 호의와 배려를 표현하는 공손성은 어느 문화권에서든 기본적으로 요구되어 왔으며, 각각의 특별한 메커니즘으로 발전해왔다. 그러나 자유로운 커뮤니케이션 환경의 발전과 더불어 오늘날 우리사회에서는 엄격한 공손성의 틀이 무너지는 탈 공손 현상이 두드러지고 있다. 대표적인 예가 방송 언어이다. 공손성을 무시하는 것이 과거 반드시 삼가야 할 행위였다면 오늘날에는 솔직하고 날카로운 질문, 혹은 유머나 재치로 인식되는 경향이다. 오락 프로그램에서는 상대방의 외모와 능력을 비하하거나 품위를 손상하고 약을 올리는 불손한 화법이 자주 등장해 지적의 대상이 되고 있다. 국민 언어생활의 모범이 되어야 할 방송 언어의 탈 공손화 현상이라는 측면에서 많은 이의 우려를 자아낼 만한 일이다. 그러나 대화 참여자들은 누구나 목적을 갖고 있으며 목적 달성 가능성을 최대화하기 위해 상황에 적합한 대화 전략을 선택적으로 구사한다는 점을 떠올릴 때, 방송 언어의 탈 공손화는 고의적인 불손 전략으로 접근하여 파악하는 것이 가능하다. 공손 전략 논의를 바탕으로 이를 이해하고자 한다.
Abstract
Humans, as social animals, need to respect each other in the process of interacting. Politeness, a strategy used to protect an addressee’s face and to express the speaker’s good intention of being considerate of his/her feelings, is universal through cultures and has developed as a specific mechanism for use in interacting on an individual basis. Today, with the changing communication environment Korean society seems to experience a collapse of the politeness norm, and impoliteness is spreading. The same trend can be seen in language use in broadcasting. Neglecting politeness in broadcasting speech acts was carefully avoided in the past, but is now understood as an honest attempt at searching for information through questions, or is seen as humorous and tactful. In broadcasting, we often observe speech acts that appear to be use of offensive language to injure the dignity of others as a means of expressing disrespect for them resulting in the loss of face for the addressee. This spreading phenomenon is worthy of concern because broadcasting language has a powerful function in educating the people of a nation rapidly and effectively. All participants in the interaction have specific goals, and each participant selects strategies that endeavor to maximize the potential of meeting those goals. Consequently, impoliteness in broadcasting is being accepted as one of the strategies purposely chosen to fulfill an interviewer’s goal. From this point of view, in reviewing the dynamic of the interview, searching for the reference to politeness as a strategy is helpful in assessing goals of the interviewer.
