Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify teacher perceptions of problems in the process of designing and implementing school wide positive behavior support (SWPBS) that focused on supporting individual students at tier 3. A qualitative case study design was employed to examine teachers' perspectives on working as a SWPBS team member to support students with developmental disabilities and challenging behavior in a special school. Record reviews, classroom observations, and interviews with teachers were used to collect data on teacher perceived problems in the process of participating in the development and implementation of individualized interventions within SWPBS. The results indicated teachers were familiar with the traditional reactive approach to managing problem behavior and had difficulty accepting the PBS approach. However, teachers were found to be eager to implement proactive individualized PBS and at the level of the entire school to implement the multi-tiered system of supports although they fear change. The teacher perceived difficulties in the process of developing and implementing SWPBS that focused on supporting individual students were as follows: developing prevention strategies during unpredicted events within the student and various school environments, limited knowledge and skills to develop function-based intervention, absence of consultation support from professionals with behavioral expertise, supporting the entire classroom students while working with individual students with challenging behavior, and a lack of communication and collaboration among team members. In addition to discussion of the study limitations, implications for future studies and practices were suggested with regard to supporting students at tier 3 with in the frame work of SWPBS.
