Abstract

The knowledge level that public has about the causes and impact of climate change is improving and their perception about severity of climate change is also getting high. The actual behavioral participation for mitigating climate change, however, is still low. Therefore, with the assumption that the goal of climate change communication should be from ‘understanding about climate change’ to ‘climate change public engagement’, the current study attempted to measure the climage change public engagement and investigate its impact based on PEP/IS Model. For this, the survey on the subject of 1,602 respondents was conducted through the website of Korea Meteorological Admistation. As a result, it was shown that climage change knowledge has a significant effect on interest in climate change, climate change public engagement, and practical behiavor for mitigating climate change, showing that public engagement also has a significant impact on the practical behavior for mitigating climate change. Furthermore, climate change public engagement proved to take a mediating role between climate change knowledge and the practical behavior for climate change mitigation.
