몸의 확장, 스며드는 기술: 맥루한으로 본 크로넨버그의 몸의 공포

이 논문은 영화감독 크로넨버그의 <비디오드롬>, <플라이>, <네이키드 런치>, <익지스텐스> 등 네 편의 영화를 통해 몸과 미디어가 융합되면서 발생하는 공포를 맥루한의이론에 입각하여 해석한다. 네 편의 영화에 등장하는 미디어에 흡수되어 통합된 몸을지닌, 극 uf과 미디어에 종속된 인간의 모습은 ‘미디어란 곧 인간의 확장이자 스며드는기술’이라고 본 맥루한의 탁견과 상통한다. 크로넨버그는 맥루한의 탁견에 공포를 가미하여 미디어에 압도되는 인간, 미디어에 의해 규정되는 인간의 인식, 그리하여 어디에나 존재하면서 항상 확장되는 무소불위의 능력으로 인해 물신화 되는 미디어, 그리고이 모든 것이 진짜인지 아니면 미디어의 환상인지 분간할 수 없는 두려움을 제시한다. 몸과 정신 뿐 아니라 현실과 망상, 나와 남, 삶과 죽음, 내면과 외면의 구분이 모두 붕괴되는 경계의 내파는 감추고 싶었던 욕망이 고스란히 외면으로 드러나는 공포, 살아있는지 죽은 건지 모호해서 느끼는 공포, 나와 남을 분간할 수 없어서 발생하는 공포로이어진다. 따라서 그의 영화에서 혼란은 결국 그 모든 게 현실인지 환상인지도 모르게와해된다. 그리고 그런 와해는 재차 공포가 되어 확장된 몸속으로 다시 스며든다.
Abstract
David Cronenberg, a filmmaker whose main interest could be condensed as 'body horror', displays how human body could be the subject of horror through his works as <Videodrome>, <The Fly>, <eXistenZ>, <Naked Lunch>. In these films, human beings are totally excluded from or absorbed into the realm of the media, and it has strong similarities to McLuhan's idea of media as the extension of men. Cronenberg denies the idea that the mind is superior to the body and goes on further to argues that our cognition on reality is always dominated by the physical environment including technology, the brain as a body part, etc. Rather, what he likes to present is that our common sense on binary opposition and the reality-cognition based on it entail the horror. The binary opposition pairs, such as mind and body, reality and delusion, self and others, life and death, in and out, all collapsed or imploded in his films. Therefore, his films are more than mere reflection of illness as metaphor as some say, but rather more radical horrors from aging, dying, uncertainty of the future, and the media which are now inseparable from our bodies, and also from the possibilities that we might be excluded or retarded from the media-saturated society.
