Abstract
The main purpose of this article is to examine the experience of pain and its meaning in the cinematic representation of the body, focusing on David Cronenberg's Videodrome, Crash and eXistenZ. The characters and worlds in his films are in a pathological state, and the body is treated as an object. The skin becomes dirty or decomposed by substances such as saliva and viruses, and something is invading the inside of the body. In addition, there is no sexual relationship as an intimate act depicted in a sublimated manner in his films, whether heterosexual or homosexual, and love eventually falls from romantic fantasies to compassion and eventually to a state of disgust. This article focuses on Julia Kristeva’s concept of 'abject', and focuses on the fact that Cronenberg's films raise paradoxical questions about humanity in modern society, which is in a crisis of narcissism and collapse of symbolic values. We first examine images of hypnosis, hallucinations, and tactile penetration that appear in the experience of cinematic representation. And, using the concept of ‘productive pathologies’ used by Thomas Elsaesser, we are detecting the political and ethical implications of his films on modern society. In addition, while examining the catharsis and sublimation problematics of ‘abject’, we conclusively present the important theme of Cronenberg's film as the problematic of bodily deprivation.
