Abstract
This study examined how self-presentation and feelings of relative deprivation on social media impact loneliness among individuals in their twenties, a group known for both high social media proficiency and high levels of loneliness. It also explored how different social media usage patterns (such as usage time, frequency of access, and active versus passive use) influence this relationship. Additionally, it investigated how social media usage behaviors—specifically, time spent, frequency of access, and active versus passive use—moderate these relationships. An online survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 600 individuals in their twenties. The findings revealed that self-presentation on social media is associated with decreased loneliness, while relative deprivation correlates with increased loneliness, consistent with prior research. Among social media usage behaviors, only frequency of access and passive use showed significant effects, with passive use unexpectedly linked to reduced loneliness. The moderation analysis indicated significant interaction effects: active use moderated the relationship between self-presentation and loneliness, while passive use moderated the relationship between relative deprivation and loneliness. Specifically, active use intensified the impact of self-presentation on loneliness at very high levels, contrary to previous studies. Conversely, passive use mitigated the loneliness-enhancing effect of relative deprivation at elevated levels. These results underscore that social media attitudes and behaviors have both direct and interactive influences on loneliness.
