Abstract

The goal of this study is to examine the relationships between consumer self-esteem and SNS addiction. In particular, this study investigates the mediating roles of loneliness and conspicuous self-presentation. It was found that there was no direct significant impact of self-esteem on SNS addiction. However, self-esteem negatively affected loneliness and positively affected conspicuous self-presentation. Loneliness as a first mediating variable positively affected conspicuous self-presentation as a second mediating variable. Also, loneliness and conspicuous self-presentation had positive influences on SNS addiction. Finally, loneliness and conspicuous self-presentation showed a significant serial mediation effect between self-esteem and SNS addiction. Additional analysis confirmed that high self-esteem participants were less likely to be addicted to SNS than those with low self-esteem. By identifying the complex relationships among these variables, this study provides theoretical and practical implications and suggestions for future study.
