초록

본 논문은 ‘성별 고정관념’이 젠더 구조를 방증하는 지적 자산이자 성평등 수준을 평가하는 중심 개념으로 자리 잡아 왔음에도 불구하고, 페미니즘에서의 이론적 지위와 현재성이 구체적으로 탐구되지 않았다는 점에 주목한다. 전통적 성별 고정관념은 약화되고 있지만, 성평등을 둘러싼 사회적 합의 수준은 좀처럼 개선되지 않고 있는 오늘날의 상황 속에서, 성별 고정관념이 성차별을 설명하는 특권적 요소가 될 수 없다는 이론적 성찰을 발판으로 삼았다. 성별 고정관념 측정 연구의 궤적을 따라 ‘성별 고정관념’이 학술 개념으로 부상하고 전개돼 온 과정을 탐구하였으며, 이를 기반으로 성별 고정관념 비판 담론의 대중화 과정에서 나타난 쟁점을 점검하고 논의 과제를 제안하였다.

Abstract

This article argues that although gender stereotypes have been regarded as an intellectual asset that evidence gender structures and are central to assessing gender equality, their theoretical significance and contemporary relevance within feminism remain underexplored. While traditional gender role attitudes, i.e., customary gender stereotypes may be weakening, the lack of progress in achieving social consensus on gender equality challenges the notion that gender stereotypes are a privileged factor in explaining gender discrimination. This article traces the academic development of gender stereotypes as a concept, examining the research trajectory on gender stereotype measurement that has led to these critical reflections. Additionally, it scrutinizes the issues arising from popularizing the gender stereotype discourse and outlines areas for further scholarly debate.
