Abstract

This study explores whether the women-are-the-enemies-of-women phenomenon is condensed within the nammisae discourse by analyzing its network and content characteristics in the female-dominated online community Theqoo. Literature suggests that contestation among gendered identities may emerge within these spaces, considering both general features of Korean online communities and distinct dynamics of women-dominated communities. Integrating the concept of horizontal violence with interpretive perspectives from attribution theory and humor theory, this study establishes three exploratory research questions addressed through topic modeling, network analysis, and content analysis of Theqoo comments. Topic modeling identifies seven feminist identity-related subtopics, including intimacy norms, community-specific norms, and norms shaped through parasocial relations with male public figures. Network analysis shows variations in centrality, density, and diffusion. Variation in attributional patterns and the dispersion of targets beyond women suggest that explicit horizontal violence toward women is not pronounced. Negative affect predominates, with intermittent playful tones. Overall, Theqoo emerges as a new affective political arena where feminist identity contestation produces tension, translates private emotions into serious public reasoning, and discursively softens political issues to sustain communal autonomy.
