Abstract

The purpose of this research is to observe whether hostility reasoning biases and anger rumination show mediating effects and dual mediating effects on the relationship between university students' forgiveness beliefs and self forgiveness. For this purpose, a questionnaire entailing the scales of forgiveness beliefs, hostility reasoning biases, anger rumination, and self forgiveness were administered to 459 students attending 2-, 3-, and 4-year colleges in Korea. For the final analysis, a total of 310 copies from 71 male and 239 female students were used. The results of the study are as follows: First, university students' forgiveness belief had significant effect hostility reasoning biases, anger rumination, and self forgiveness. Second, hostility reasoning biases and anger rumination showed a partial mediating effect and dual mediating effect on the relationship between university students' forgiveness belief and self forgiveness. It was confirmed that hostility reasoning biases and anger rumination may bring negative effects on the relationship between university students' forgiveness beliefs and self forgiveness, and caution should be taken when applying forgiveness concepts in counselling and psychotherapy. Based on its findings, the study further discussed implications, limitations, and follow-up research.
