Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effects of forgiveness in the relationship between negative social exchanges and the depressive symptoms of university students. A total of 421 students were recruited from four universities in Seoul. The data thus collected were analyzed by means of Pearson’s correlations and multiple regression analyses. The major findings of the study were as follows. First, negative social exchanges were positively related to depressive symptoms, and forgiveness was negatively related to depressive symptoms. Second, forgiveness moderated the association between negative social exchanges and depressive symptoms. These results suggest that forgiveness could be a protective factor against both negative social exchanges and depressive symptoms.
