Abstract
This study explored how pupils conceive ‘similarity and difference’ when they think of a pupil with Special Educational Needs(SEN) in their classes, how to support him/her, and in what context they personally feel it to be unfair if a teacher treats him/her differently. An open ended questionnaire was used to gain pupils’ opinions and the thematic analysis was applied for data analysis. Most pupils in inclusive settings considered the pupils with SEN as ‘in need of help’ so that they voluntarily provided an extensive support for him/her in daily routines such as class participation, break time including emotional well-being(saying encouraging words etc.). On the other hand, they felt it was unfair when the teacher applied distinctive rules or allowed him/her to do alternative tasks or not during the class. At the same time, some pupils took it for granted that if a pupil with SEN is not capable of a task it is fair for him/her to be exempted from the normal standard. In this case, the pupil with SEN is seen as ‘helpless’, and has no chance to become an independent learner. Interestingly, other pupils felt sorry that pupil with SEN could only participate in a limited way(not being given an appropriate learning task) so that he/she missed out on enjoying the feeling of having mastered a task. The most important thing is that teachers should provide opportunity for every learner so that they can make an effort to achieve their potential. Also, pupils’ opinions can be used to make learning community more inclusive. The inclusive education is a journey of learning for all.
