Abstract

This study carried out a questionnaire survey asking the degree of the importance of social skills required for students with intellectual disabilities to adapt in inclusive middle schools. The responses of 144 general education teachers and 426 peers without disabilities in inclusive classes of middle schools in Seoul were analyzed for means and standard deviations of the rating scores of the importance of each social skill and 3 sub-areas of social skills. T-test was employed to verify the differences between two groups' perception levels and the differences of the perception levels according to the background variables of each group of teachers and peers. The findings were as follows; (1)peers perceived 30 social skills were important, teachers did 27 social skills. Teachers rated the priority of 3 sub-areas of the social skills in the following orders: self-control, assertion, cooperation, and peers rated self-control, cooperation, assertion. In cooperation area, there were statistically significant differences in two groups; (2)In teachers' perception of importance levels of assertion and cooperation areas, there were statistically significant differences according to the problem behaviors of students with intellectual disabilities; (3)In peers' perception of importance of social skills, there was not statistically significant difference according to the problem behaviors of students with intellectual disabilities; (4) In teachers' perception of importance of social skills, there was not significant difference according to their past instructional experience in inclusive classes; (5)In peers' perception of the importance of social skills, there was not significant difference according to their background variables. Finally, some limitations of this study and suggestion for future research were provided.
