Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using visual support to teach high-functioning adolescents with autism comprehension of idioms and mental state verbs. Twenty idioms and ten mental state verbs frequently used in our daily life were selected. Ten mental state verbs included know, want, remember, forget, think, guess, believe, decide, except, and imagine. Two male adolescents attending high school took part in a 4-months intervention program. During intervention three types of visual support were presented: pictures, colors, and interactive actions. Results obtained using a multiple-probe design across tasks indicated that two of the adolescents showed significant improvement in comprehension of the idioms and mental state verbs. These findings provide preliminary support for the effectiveness of pragmatic language intervention using visual support with high-functioning adolescents with autism.
